As I approach another year of teaching English, I have been reflecting on this idea of myth as an invitation into a deeper relationship with the truth—similar to God calling Abraham on the greatest and most dangerous adventure of his life, following the Creator of the universe. Myth stirs us for a reason, not because it gives us the thrill of the make-believe, but especially insofar as it echoes a greater truth, it invites us to the very brink of truths greater than our imaginings.
What is our response to the call, to the invitation? Are we willing to go where it will take us, even if we don’t fully understand?

The Call
Under mythic stars
the old man sits and listens.
The wind stirs the grass.
